Recently got an asus rog laptop but unfortunately it didnt come with an ssd installed internally, so I'm wondering..

I bought an ssd with an external usb 3.0 enclosure. If I install windows on it and boot from it using Yumi or something like that, would it be faster than the internal non ssd sata drive? I cant put the ssd inside myself, or so I'm told by asus, because it will void the warranty

The laptop does seem a bit slow and sluggish compared to what it should be, I think its because of the lack of an ssd

Hello... as FAR as I know at this Time... Windows will not allow USB boot option... or as a "Portable OS" operation.
Sata connection is your fastest and only option here... Typically a Laptop will be designed for LOW Power from the battery and they will mount a Slow 5400 rpm harddrive in them... SSD will be the best of both worlds, Low power and Speed... They are the future...

As a "Simple Test" plug a USB3.0 stick into it... and see if you can load a Program to it... Start using it for Running, sending, storing, the Program Data on it... THEN do the the same procedure with the program installed on your laptop hardrive. This will give you an idea of how the Performance differs.

Here is the other Design problem... USB3.0 is a Windows...

We've found no practical way to fresh-install the Win 8.1 OS on a USB external HDD (USBEHD). (I assume you're working with that OS). While there have been reports of successfully achieving that type of installation I've never been able to confirm them.

But there is a reasonable workaround for your objective depending upon the following.

I'm assuming the TOTAL contents on your 1 TB HDD (your present boot drive) is LESS than the diskspace capacity (240 GB) of your SSD.

I can go on from here but first confirm (or not) the preceding assumption.

From what I have read, running the OS from an SSD, via USB 3.0, is usually faster than a regular internal drive.

I have the G750JW laptop and it fits two drives. You most certainly can swap out the drive in that system. What I did was clone the 1TB drive that came with it, over to the 256GB SSD. Then I installed the SSD and moved the 1TB over to the secondary drive, giving me a ton of storage space. I imagine your laptop is probably pretty similar, just a newer model than mine.
